For anyone in the Wisconsin area contemplating divorce or facing a family law issue, choosing the right attorney is one of the most important decisions you will make. Cordell & Cordell's Milwaukee office is a choice worth considering, offering a blend of specialized expertise, a client-focused approach, and practical convenience.
The firm’s singular focus on divorce and family law is a significant advantage. This is not a general practice that handles a little bit of everything. Instead, its attorneys have dedicated their professional lives to mastering the complexities of domestic relations. This deep specialization means they are better equipped to handle both common and unusual case scenarios, providing a level of confidence and strategic insight that is hard to find in a general law practice.
The commitment to advocating for clients, particularly men, in family law matters is another key differentiator. In a legal system that can sometimes be perceived as imbalanced, a firm that openly addresses and works to counteract these perceptions provides a crucial service. This focus allows them to understand the specific concerns of their clients and build a legal strategy that is truly tailored to their needs.
Furthermore, the practical features of the office, such as its accessible downtown location with validated parking and its appointments-recommended policy, demonstrate a genuine concern for the client's experience. In a time of significant personal upheaval, having a legal team that is not only skilled but also easy to work with can make a world of difference. The ability to schedule an appointment ensures you will receive the full attention of an attorney, and the physical accessibility of the office removes barriers for all potential clients.
While one customer review provides a glowing recommendation for a specific attorney and another expresses a deeply negative experience, these individual reviews are not representative of the firm as a whole. The fact that the firm has a team of dedicated professionals and a clear business model focused on a specific legal niche suggests a commitment to their mission. The best choice is always an informed one, and by understanding the firm’s focus, services, and operational style, Wisconsin residents can make a decision that feels right for them and their family. Cordell & Cordell's Milwaukee office offers a compelling case as a strong, specialized, and client-centric legal partner for any family law matter.

- Child Custody
Child custody refers to the rights and obligations between parents, regarding their children, after a divorce, legal separation, or paternity decree. There are two independent types of custody. Physical custody refers to the amount of time each parent is permitted physically with a child. This may be sole, primary, or joint custody. Legal custody refers to a parent’s decision-making rights regarding a child’s health, education, and welfare. It, too, may be sole, primary, or joint custody.
- Child Support
Regardless of your fight to gain custody of your children, child support will be an issue in your case. You will either be paying it or receiving it. Courts have little discretion in setting the amount of child support to be paid. This is because, as a condition of receiving federal aid, the states are required to follow certain standards in their child support statutes. Although the exact procedures and details vary from state to state, there is a certain basic pattern no matter where you live.
- Contempt Proceedings
Contempt can only come into play after a court has issued judgments, orders or decrees to govern the behavior of the parents, which it can do at any point during the divorce proceedings. Once a court has issued such decrees, it is important for you to observe them to the best of your ability and, at the same time, to take note of any potential violations on the part of your ex-wife or former partner. Courts have been known to take it personally when a parent disregards their orders.
- Divorce Information – Petitions, Discovery, Settlement and Trial
Cordell & Cordell divorce attorneys work to ensure every client has the divorce information and family law resources they need to understand the divorce process and know what to expect before meeting with a family law attorney. A divorce can be a long process, and preparation is key in minimizing the length of your case.
- Establishing Paternity in a Divorce or Child Support Case
When the parents of a child are not married at the beginning of the pregnancy or at the birth of the child, the father is legally without the rights and responsibilities of a parent. The father, mother, or a third party on behalf of the child, must seek a declaration of paternity to legally establish a parent-child relationship with the father. This process gives the father specific custodial rights while imposing upon him a legal obligation to provide specific financial support for the child.
- Legal Separation
(In states where permitted.) Legal Separation is a court process designed to define the important rights and obligations between spouses when they live apart, but do not want divorce. The decree for legal separation establishes rules between the spouses regarding such issues as child custody, visitation, and spousal maintenance (alimony). It also divides property and usually debt. However, unlike divorce, the marital bonds are not severed and the spouses continue to be husband and wife. If, at any time during the legal separation, or thereafter, either spouse believes that the differences between them are irreconcilable, he or she may file a motion to convert to a dissolution of the marriage.
- Military Family Law
When a couple decides to end their marriage while one spouse is serving in the military, divorce tends to get more complicated. There are specific rules about where to file for divorce, how to calculate child support, how to determine child custody, how to divide retirement benefits, and more that you need to know. At Cordell & Cordell, we understand the unique challenges military families face during divorce. Our attorneys are able to handle these cases to ensure that your rights and the rights of your children are protected.
- Modification of Divorce Decrees
It’s not unusual for ex-spouses to want to change a prior decree respecting issues of custody and support. A party seeking to modify his decree must show a substantial and continuing change of circumstances. Those circumstances may include dramatic changes in income, relocation to another state, or problems relating to the proper care of his minor children. Cordell & Cordell will ensure that, to the extent possible, our clients’ goals are achieved in light of the new circumstances while preserving those rights provided for in prior decrees.
- Power of Attorney
Sending your child off to college is an exciting experience, but it also brings a lot of stress. As a divorced parent, you have enough to worry about without being concerned about having access to your son or daughter’s educational, medical, financial, and other critical information.
- Property Division and Asset Division
Every marriage has at least one topic in common – property. Whether they own a million-dollar mansion or a beat-up RV, a couple will always have to divide up the property and debt. Certain assets remain the exclusive property of one of the marriage partners, even after marriage, and some will be divided. This is done with debts as well. Most debt incurred while married will be shared upon dissolution, though a few personal debts may remain exclusively yours.
- Protection Order
Protection orders are unfortunately common in family law cases and are often used for strategic reasons. The misuse of a protection order when going through a divorce is one of the more prevalent and unfortunate trends in family law. A system that was designed to protect against abuse is itself being abused.
- Spousal Support, Alimony, Maintenance
In some instances a wife will ask for alimony, the court-ordered payment of money to your wife after the dissolution of marriage. If you made more money (especially if you were the primary breadwinner), there is a good chance your wife will seek alimony. The bigger the difference in earnings and the longer you were married, the larger the alimony payment will be.

I understood the process from start to finish which could be nerve racking considering it was new territory for me. I Fully recommend Ms. MacPhail to anyone seeking professional help in situations such as mine as I am more than confident she will handle it with care to the fullest extent.
April 08 · Kasiem DuranI am dealing Aaron Lambarde and he was my my attorney for my divorced case and he seen me broken up coming to him to help me for Cassidy and because I am in my divorce caseI was a struggle with the other attorney because she sold me to them and I come for him and explain for him with the situation and the first thing he said him, and the girl was working with him. She can’t win the custody and take the kids out of Wisconsin and what happened. She went to custody and take the kids out out of Wisconsin and even I can’t see him and because my English is bad, he used to explain for me something and make me sign on a paper with different stuff right now even I can’t see my kid i’ll take it in the holiday. I don’t know how the stuff work in the United States but for real you need to watch attorney specially with a big company like a crocodile I pay them around $35,000 and I lost everything if I know it’s gonna happen like that I will never go to court. I will use those money for something else and save it. Don’t go toCordell They are scam and not trusted people. I thought only she pay bribe to the gal and judge look like she bribe to my attorney to
June 12 · AhmadEmbodies the classic scam model of initial consultations. I specifically requested a male attorney for a father’s rights case, yet they assigned me a female attorney with a defeatist attitude. She charged me $180 only to regurgitate generic information I could easily obtain from an AI chat, while also guilt-tripping me for not starting the process sooner. This was after I had just explained how my ex financially ruined me for two years, and I had only recently recovered enough to take legal action. The irony is that I take great satisfaction in knowing that opportunists like this will soon be replaced by AI. Cordell and Cordell is the McDonald’s of law firms—selling ‘nothing burgers’ to people who can least afford it.
December 17 · Ben Frame (benframe.eth)I went with them to lower child support. They made a deal to pay 600.00 plus for two kids. After my son turned 18 the rate remained the same. Had no idea it would not lower after he was over 18. Never met a lawyer ever. Just worked with paralegal. I put down 5 grand was told I would probably get some money back. Instead owed much more. Save your money not worth the money.
December 17 · Scott StadlerGiving a one star review is giving far more credit than this firm deserves! They are predators that do not serve or protect their customers, they only serve and protect their associates at the BARR! My first attorney Jennifer Paine absolutely refused to do anything to protect my son or I or to help establish my fundamental rights when I complained to the firm they replaced Jennifer Paine with Jennifer Zelezznik just before Jennifer Paine was disbarred! The change in representation was no help because it was still the exact same tactics to continue to prolong and delay proceedings for maximum billing and not do anything I needed to help my son and I. I was gaslighted and instead of protecting my son and I they billed me to protect my abusers and the courts! Then they completely withdrew from my case leaving me with years of legal expenses and no progress and now they are still threatening me financially after never providing any legal assistance in any way shape or form, but only adding to my stress and legal abuse! There’s absolutely no way you could do worse going pro se than wasting your time and money with these extortion committing criminals!
